DIY TIPS TO PAINTING YOUR HOME

These are 10 very important steps to being a DIY painter. Follow these procedures properly and you'll be on your way to painting your very 1st wall.
Good luck.

1. Plan your approach

Start by thinking about how you want the finished project to look and remember that you’re not limited to four walls in the same color. Consider painting an accent wall in a bold hue or highlighting moldings in a contrasting shade or finish. And don’t forget to look up and see whether the ceiling could use a refresh as well.

2. Choose your color

Going through fan decks, paint chips and colour chats can be overwhelming. Start by figuring out the general color characteristics: Do you want a warm or cool shade? A neutral or a saturated shade? If you have existing furniture or art, you’ll also want to consider how the shade will compliment them. Once you have a sense of what you’re looking for, pick a few shades and get samples. Test the shades to see how they look in the room at different times of day (Day&Night). Many paint companies also have tools on their websites that will let you upload a photo of your space and preview different colors on the walls. But colors can look different in real-world conditions, so you’ll still need to try it out in the space.

3. Pick out your tools and materials

Every project is unique and you may need different tools depending on the paint you choose and the condition of your walls, but here are a few must-haves.

• Paint
• Paint roller
• Paint roller extension pole
• Drop cloths
• Paintbrushes
• Paint tray
• Sandpaper
• Painter’s tape
• Rags
• Putty knife

4. Determine how much paint you'll need

Whether you’re painting a powder room or the exterior of your house, the general rule of thumb is one gallon per 400 square feet, says Carl Minchew, vice president of color innovation and design at Benjamin Moore. But that’s just a rough guideline: To get a more precise number, which you’ll definitely want for large projects, use a paint calculator like the ones provided by Benjamin Moore or Pratt & Lambert; they take into account window and door measurements. (And both assume two coats of paint per project.)

Note that you'll need additional paint when going from dark to light colour. I recommend apply a gray tinted primer to the surface before you paint your walls a saturated (lighter) color to help reduce the number of applications.

5. Prep the walls and the room

Look thoroughly at the wall for cracks and holes. If any, fill it up with putty using a putty knife to smoothen the surface. Also,  you don't want to damage your favorite sofa or that nicely constructed TV shelf, so empty the room of all the furniture. If you don't have enough space, push everything to the center. Cover the pieces with a drop cloth or lightweight plastic sheeting (black or transparent nylon for covering) and do the same with the floor. Don't skip the drop cloth, paint will splatter, I promise. Grab a roll of painter's tape—I recommend FrogTape—and firmly apply it to the edges of the room's corners, base and crown moldings, and door and window casings, using a putty knife to seal if needed.  Remove sockets and light switch covers and apply painters tape to protect outlets and switches from paint drips.

6. Mix your paint

Use a wooden paint stick to stir the paint, and re-stir often throughout the project. If you’re using more than one gallon of paint, combine the cans in a large bucket in case there is a slight variation in color.

7. Pick your painting techniques

Your paint is mixed and your roller is ready, but make sure to plan a strategy before you get started. Work from the top of the room down, starting with the ceilings. Planning a bold focal wall? Paint the adjoining light-color walls first. Don't worry if you get paint on what will be your accent wall—the dark paint will cover up whatever lighter paint found its way there. After the lighter wall dries, tape off that edge so the dark color doesn't bleed onto your new paint.  If you're covering up dark walls with a brighter hue, plan on three coats: your primer, plus two coats of the new color to ensure nothing shows through.

Tackle one wall at a time. Take a brush and "cut in"—paint along the molding and the corners from top to bottom—while your friend uses a roller to cover the main expanse of the wall, staying away from those more precise spots. When applying paint with the roller, use long strokes in a W pattern for ample coverage (and to avoid those roller marks). Once the wall is dry to the touch, it's ready for a second coat.
If you are painting the trim, remove the painter’s tape and wait for the walls to dry, before applying tape to the walls. Start with the trim closest to the ceiling, moving on to door and window frames, and finally the baseboards or tile skirting (as the case may be.)

8. Don’t forget ventilation

Make sure your space is well-ventilated throughout the project by opening windows and using fans. Keeping the room warm and a fan blowing definitely helps speed up the drying process. If it's a damp day, it will take much longer for the paint to dry so always endeavor to paint on a hot or dry day.

9. Clean up

You’ve done multiple coats, but it’s not time to relax just yet. Remove all painters tape and gather drop clothes, making sure any spills or splatters are dry before you move them. For latex- and water-based paints, clean brushes with soap and water, while oil-based paints will require mineral spirits (Petrol, kerosene, thinner, whatever you can get.) You can use a painter’s brush to clean and reshape bristles. If you want to reuse roller covers, use the curved edge of a 5-in-1 tool to remove the paint under running water.

10. Give yourself enough time

The amount of time your project will take depends on the size of your room, how you’re painting, and your skill level. For instance, using a dark shade on the walls and painting the ceiling and trim will take longer than just doing the walls in a neutral. While some spaces can be done in a few hours, others may take several days. Be sure to budget more time than you think the job will need and don’t forget to take prep and cleanup into account.

For those who see this process as tasking, overwhelming and stressful, well, painting is one of the most stressful jobs in the world. We hereby advice that you contact a professional in the industry. Saves your time, energy and resources. Also guarantees you get a flawless job done.

Picking the right sheen for your house painting projects

WHAT IS PAINT SHEEN, AND WHY DOES IT MATTERS?
Paint sheen refers to your paint’s level of gloss - is it shiny, or more flat? Each sheen has its own set of strengths and weaknesses, and you’ll encounter specific cases where one will stand out as the best option by far.
  • FlatFlat or Matte sheens are ideal for low-traffic areas such as formal dining rooms and master bedrooms. They provide a beautiful finish, with little to no shine, and are ideal to hides minor surface imperfections. Flats/Mattes can be used in living rooms, dining rooms and bedrooms where fingerprints, scuff marks and stains are less likely to be an issue. It’s very friendly and forgiving! So, how about the downside? Well, it’s just not very durable. This would NOT be an option to choose for a high-traffic space.

  • Eggshell - Eggshell paints are more washable and scrub-able than a flat or matte option. They have a slightly lower sheen than satin, but offer a similar level of durability. Eggshell paints are ideal for living rooms, bedrooms and family rooms with more traffic and fingerprints since they can be wiped clean more easily.

  • SatinSatin paints go a step further than eggshell in wash-ability and scrub-ability, providing a nice balance: a practical choice for easy clean up, but not too much shine. They perform and look great in just about any room.

  • Semi-Gloss - This is a popular, versatile product. It’s a little harder to work with, but it also has that crucial toughness and wash-ability that you might need, especially if kids or pets are part of the equation.

  • High-Gloss - At the top of the glossiness spectrum, high-gloss paint offers incredible durability and a stylish depth and luster. Unfortunately, it also is extremely difficult to work with, requiring an experienced hand and the right tools. Thorough, meticulous surface preparation is also essential. Any imperfections, no matter how slight, will shine right through your beautiful, unforgiving finish.

MATCHING THE RIGHT PAINT SHEEN TO YOUR SURFACE
As you pick your sheen, here are a few questions to ask yourself:
  •  What are your stylistic goals?
  •  What is the condition of your surface?
  •  How do you need your paint to perform? Surfaces like doors and trim often do well with a tougher paint finish, while a powder room might not need that level of strength and wash-ability.
  • How comfortable are you with surface prep and repairs? Semi and high-gloss calls for a flawless surface.

WHAT IS THE BEST TIME TO PAINT YOUR HOME?

Definitely before you list it to sell or after a renovation or home addition. Makes sense to add a professionally done, fresh coat of paint to update the look of your home.

There are several reasons why you should paint your home. In some cases, it’s personal preference, in other cases it’s due to old, peeling paint. No matter the circumstance, there are a few considerations homeowners should mull over before painting their home.

While you can paint the interior of your home any time of year, wintertime seems to be ideal because you can open a window, providing more ventilation during the process. When it comes to painting the exterior of your home, you should select a month when humidity levels are low and the rainy season has passed. Also, most paint experts agree that having your home sealed after it’s been painted is a good way to preserve the integrity of the color. It also helps to reduce peeling and cracking.

5 Reasons to Paint Your Home

Homeowners have several reasons why they should paint their home, however some of the most common ones include:

  • SELLING: Homes that move fast in a competitive market have been professionally painted with an appealing, neutral color. Before you put your home on the market have a Realtor® or designer evaluate your current paint colors. Colors that are too trendy, outdated or bold should be re-painted with a neutral, soothing color that complements your furnishings. Also, if it’s been a while since you’ve painted your house, a fresh coat will give your home the distinct advantage over other homes on the market.
  • UPDATING: That red wall you painted six years ago seemed like a great idea at the time, but now you are sick and tired of looking at it. Bring your home up to date by re-painting it with neutral or the latest colors. The wonderful thing about paint is that if you don’t like the colors in a few years, re-painting is easy and inexpensive.
  • RESTORING: Painting your home helps to reignite and restore the glory of your once grand home. A whole lot of old but awesoand wonderful memories can be gotten back. At the sane time, painting it will help restore it's market value.

7 Ways To Dazzle Your Guests

The home is where the heart is, but it isn’t complete without people in it. To infuse soul into your homes, you ought to have it brimming with energy – be it from the family members who live there or the guests that drop by. Maintaining a welcoming home requires you to be creative and innovative. Here are some sure shot tips to help you dazzle your guests.

1. Refreshing aesthetics:

House interiors always evolve and change, but it isn’t practical that you continuously spend on large-scale renovations and refurbishments. There is nothing wrong with sticking to the same theme, but we have to admit – it doesget boring in the long run. Here’s a little trick to amp up the theme of your living room. Extend your creativity not just to the guest lounge, but to the hall and dining areas as well! Try changing a small element every month and surprise your guests. Wondering how? Start with the basics. Use a bold centerpiece to begin with. Dare to mix and match colours, furniture and decorative pieces.Gradually introduce a mobile garden unit, a display trolley or a book holder – one step at a time.

2. Evoke your feelings with textures:
Has your house ever felt bland and boring? If it has, it’s time to work up a texture-play. Dazzle your guests instantly with minimal effort by working your way through different textures in the living space. You can use a combination of patterns and colours to lift the face of the guest area or add different coloured blinds to your living room – the possibilities are endless! In the next phase, introduce a new element, like a magazine rack or a vintage shelf. Bored of the same old curtains? You can make it interesting by choosing layered fabrics – throw in some textured rugs and sequined cushions to the sofa set and you are done! This textural contrast could look very classy and intriguing at the same time. Just remember to stop as too many textures can be overwhelming on the eyes.

3. Make it pop:
Bright colours radiate happiness and vibrancy.Even if your theme is monochromatic, you can still introduce some colour pop! If you like varied shades, spruce up some magic with a splash of bright or metallic tone. Be sure to plan your colours well and start off with a plain wall. You can even be creative with it – adding a layer of textured paint to the wall every 2-3 months or simply colour one stripe of the wall. Sometimes, placing colour cubes on hollow frames could work too!

4. Let your inner designer flow:

Who says impressing guests with your sparkling home ought to be an expensive affair? You don’t have to spend too much on a fresh look. Monotony is the true enemy. Find DIY tactics online and begin your experimental project! You can add designs to the wall, change wallpapers, create a small indoor garden or simply use those drills and grills to string up some greeting cards with creepers on your wall. Additionally, you could also paint your wheelbarrow or fancy flower pot and place it in your theme corner with potpourri. Simple yet presentable ideas, right?

5. Shine on:

Here’s a zesty approach to sprucing your home:add some zing by incorporating interesting colours and elements that make the space vibrant. Special effects  can be easily created on the walls using metallic colours, pearl tones, and vibrant spray paints. Have fun with colours and be brave to experiment on a bare wall! To woo your guests, add some spark to the drab space. Go big. Go bold. Go metallic.

6.Simply elegant:

While you should be experimental, avoid over-cluttering the colours! To make your life easier, use paints that can withstand dust and can be easily wiped off in case of staining. Simplicity and beauty go hand in hand!

7.Remember the first impressions:

First impressions count – dazzle your guests with new design styles each time they enter your home! Keep it fresh, modern and easy to maintain. Fragrances are an inexpensive way to add allure to your home and it also shows your guests that you care more than just the visual aesthetics! With durable paints, long-lasting wall finishes, and furniture varnishes to keep your house clean and safe, you could also save a lot of effort and money in repairs and replacement. A vibrant home also brings happy smiles and positive attitudes!
Sprucing up a home is no difficult task. Sometimes, it just requires a little creativity and patience. Keep at it and don’t give up! Remember, if you adore your dream home and work towards making it a warm and cosy space, your guests will too.

10 House Painting Rules That Should NEVER Be Broken

Whether you DIY or go with a pro, make sure each step of the process is done right.
Source: Getty Images

No home improvement program revives, protects and beautifies a house as quickly, effectively and affordably as exterior painting. A new coat of paint can completely transform a house, and while painting a house can be a big job, it’s a project that can be completed in a week or two.
If you hire a professional painter, expect to pay from N150000 to N500000 or more, depending on the size and condition of your house. By doing the work yourself, you can save the labor portion of the cost – typically more than half – but it will take some serious effort.
Regardless of whether you hire a pro or you do it yourself, painting your house is something you won’t want to repeat in a few years. With this in mind, here are 10 critical rules that will ease the work and help ensure a beautiful, lasting result.
1. Don’t skimp on materials. Pay for top-quality paint, primer and caulking compound. Top-quality paint lasts longer, and flows and covers better than poor-quality paint. Buy paint that has a lifetime warranty against defects in the finish.
With most house paint, you get what you pay for – the best ingredients are expensive. High-quality exterior paint typically costs from N15000 to N20000 per gallon, up to N35000. Be sure to choose 100 percent acrylic paint.
Top-performing exterior paint brands include Dulux Paint, Plascon Paint costing between N25000 and N35000 per gallon.
Flat finishes, preferred for siding, do a good job of hiding defects and irregularities. Satin and semi-gloss enamels, used for trim, are more durable and easier to wash.
2. Do the necessary preparation. For paint to adhere well, it must be applied to a surface that is clean, dry and not flaking or peeling. Depending on the condition of existing siding and trim, this often means considerable scraping and sanding may be required before you can paint.
Begin by washing the surfaces. You can use a hose and a scrub brush with water and detergent, or a pressure washer. If you use a pressure washer, you must be careful not to drive water deeply into the joints between siding or erode the surface of the wood with the high-pressure water spray.
To remove loose, flaking paint, you’ll need a scraper. Then, for removing tougher paint and smoothing the surface, a 5-inch disc power sander or a random-orbit sander will work well. Start with 60-grit sandpaper and follow-up with 100-grit sandpaper.
The idea isn’t to remove all of the paint, just to remove loose paint and smooth the surface. Use a putty knife and wood filler to fill cracks and holes. Let the filler dry, and then sand these areas again. Brush off all of the dust, caulk the joints, and allow the caulk to dry before applying primer.
3. Beware of lead paint. Though today’s house paints do not contain lead, old paint applied before 1978 is likely to contain lead. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency warns any home improvement work around lead paint can create a lead dust or chips that can be hazardous to the health of children and adults.
For lead testing and removal, the EPA recommends you contact local lead-safe certified renovation contractors, which can be found through the EPA’s website.
4. Don’t skimp on coats of paint. Begin with a high-quality oil-alkyd primer if you’re painting over bare wood or metal for your base coat. Some painters like to tint the primer toward the final paint color to minimize the need for two finish coats of paint. Others prefer to tint the primer to a contrasting color, which will highlight any spots where the final coats haven’t completely covered.
Apply the first finish coat and, after it becomes tacky, apply a second top coat.
5. Use the right tools. A high-quality brush, roller and, for some houses, an airless sprayer can be rented at most home improvement centers or tool rental outlets. The easiest way to apply primer and paint to textured surfaces is to spray it on with an airless sprayer, and then back-roll it by hand with a roller to ensure adhesion.
If you have never used an airless sprayer, pay close attention to the equipment’s directions and gain a little experience by painting a less-conspicuous side of the house first. Work from a 5-gallon paint bucket and use a paint strainer so paint doesn’t clog the sprayer.
6. Be realistic. Don’t paint your house yourself unless you have the time, tools, skills and stamina to do the work. Depending on the size and height of your house and the condition of the existing siding, preparing and painting a house on your own can be a tedious, difficult job.
7. Wait for temperate weather. Don’t paint on hot days, in the rain, or during windy or dusty weather. Ideal temperatures for painting are between 50 and 90 degrees Fahrenheit. Hot weather causes the paint to dry too quickly, as does direct sun. When possible, follow the shade. Temperatures below 50 degrees may prevent the paint from adhering to the surface properly. Dampness or dew can bubble surfaces.
8. Cover everything else. Protect decks, shrubs, gardens, patios and walkways from paint spills and splatters with drop cloths or plastic sheeting. This will save you from big cleanup problems later. If you use an airless paint sprayer, masking and covering will be absolutely imperative – overspray can even coat your neighbors’ cars.
9. Paint using proven techniques. If you’re a painting novice, do your homework. You can find lots of free information on the web, including videos by pros and experts that show specific techniques.
Work from the top down, starting with overhangs so fresh paint won’t drip on newly painted surfaces. Paint the siding, and when that’s dry, tape around windows and doors, and paint the trim. As soon as you’re finished painting the trim, remove painter’s tape or masking tape so it won’t leave a residue. After all of the paint has dried, touch up where paint hasn’t covered fully.
10. If you hire a pro, get bids and references. from at least three painting contractors, and ask them for the names and phone numbers of satisfied customers. Call two or three of those customers or, if possible, visit their homes to inspect the workmanship and confirm the customers’ satisfaction.
